The zoom lens appeared to go soft in the centre of the image at certain focal lengths.

Conclusions...
The 27mm lens is astonishingly sharp right across the frame
The 27mm lens is sharper than the zoom by a small margin
The X E2 and 27mm together make an excellent combination capable of brilliant results and super compact
On the whole the 18-55 zoom gave very good results (aside from the soft centre issue)
I prefer the images straight out of the Nikon but with editing the Fuji can also produce excellent results
The strange effect on the pebbles occurred with both lenses on the Fuji (all settings at default) but not on the Nikon
